Yesterday was April 1st; this is usually when #brands do #pranks like fake products or lame social media campaigns. These are all just sad excuses for publicity, but BMW of New Zealand decided to take a different approach.
BMW's New Zealand branch put an ad in a local paper that promised a "free car" to the first person to come to a specific dealership and ask for "Tom." Part of the "prank" was to find out who would actually show up and risk looking like a fool. One woman took the bait and ended up with a brand new 1-series.
Recently the FTC warned us about dealership advertisements that were too good to be true. We should still keep our guard up, but sometimes nice things really do happen with no strings attached.
