Volkswagen's all new MQB platform has already spawned some likable cars such as the Audi A3 and Golf/GTI. But many long-roof lovers have been holding out for the all new Sportwagen. Formally the misnamed "Jetta Sportwagen," the MK7 version will have more space, more power, and less weight.

Sportwagens should be hitting dealership lots sometime in April and will have a starting price of $21.395. On the previous platform, really the only way to go was to opt for the TDI, but the 1.8T motor is pretty punchy with 170hp and will still return 36 MPG. While the base model gets a gets a $1000 price increase, the TDI versions are $2000 cheaper than the outgoing car.

For under $22k you can have a 1.8 TSI S model with a 5-speed manual transmission. It will come standard with the usual features such as Bluetooth, touchscreen infotainment, and leatherette seating. The bad news is that you must give up that third pedal on the 1.8T, once you step up to the SE ($26,995) and SEL ($29,345) trims. However, you will get a couple of upgrades on the such as 17 inch wheels, push button start, panoramic sunroof and a Fender audio system on the SE. The SEL will add 18 inch wheels, navigation, power seats, and automatic A/C. Other options include an automatic transmission for $1100, a $995 lighting package, and a $695 Driver's Assist package.

The 1.8T is nice and all, but you still want the 150hp diesel that should return about 43 mpg on the highway. That starts $24,595 for a TDI S with a 6-speed manual transmission, it will come standard with 16 inch wheels, push-button-start, and rear-camera. The SE ($27,995) and SEL ($30,345) trims will have the same additional features as on the TSI SE and SEL models. If for some strange reason you don't like operating a clutch, a DSG will set you back $1100.

VW has not yet released pricing or availability on all-wheel-drive versions of the Sportwagen.

If you want a diesel wagon and the ability to row your own gears, this is your only option here in the US, but it looks promising. I'm still holding out one last shred of hope for a Golf R Sportwagen.
